Pillows are easily one of the best ways to spruce up an area or change the complete look and feel of a room. Pillows are inexpensive, fun, flirty, sophisticated, whimsical, basically any mood you want to portray you can do it with pillows. What’s even better is if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for pillows are easy to make yourself.

When you make a pillow you have limitless choices. The only thing that limits you is your imagination and your creativity. So let’s get creative.

The first place to stop is your local fabric store. Here you will find a huge selection of fabrics and you should be able to find something that fits your style, taste and the look and feel you are trying to create in your room.

Once you’ve decided on the appropriate fabric you must decide on how large or small you want your pillow to be. You can make this choice easily by finding a pillow form that is the size you want for your pillow.

Once you’ve decided on the size of your pillow form you want to make sure you have at least an inch of extra fabric all the way around the form. So if your form is 10 by 10 you want your fabric to be at least 11 by 11. You will want to cut two pieces of fabric to the necessary size.

Once you have your fabric cut to the correct size you are going to put the two pieces of fabric together, with the “good sides” facing one another.

You can do the next step by hand or with a sewing machine, understanding a machine will always provide you with a more secure and sturdy seam. Whichever way you decide you now want to sew three sides of the pieces together.

Once you have the three sides sewn together you are going to turn your pillow inside out. Now you will be seeing the “right side” of the material, and basically what your pillow will look like. You should use a knife to poke out the corners of your pillow, which will give them good definition.

There are only a couple steps left. You want to stuff your pillow form in the opening of your pillow. Once you have the pillow form inside the pillow the last step is to sew up the last seam.

Make sure you fold in the edges so you will have a clean looking seam, then by hand or using your sewing machine sew up the last seam.

You should have a beautiful pillow now. This is a basic pillow pattern. You can easily add embelishments, or tassles to your pillow, but that is a more advanced lesson.
